Long-Term Accutane Side Effects

Accutane, which is a brand name of the generic drug isotretinoin, is used to treat severe cases of acne. Patients on this drug experience numerous short-term effects, such as chapped lips, dry skin and sensitivity to the sun. Fetal birth defects are another serious side effect of this drug, which is the reason for the iPLEDGE program that is used to prevent pregnancy for one month before, during the course of, and for one month after discontinuing the Accutane treatment. However, there are also some serious long-term effects of taking this drug that must be seriously considered before filling a prescription for Accutane.

  1. Mental Health

    • One of the long-term effects of Accutane is depression. This depression may lead to suicide if it isn't treated by a mental health professional. However, most cases of depression don't require inpatient treatment or long term medication regimes.

    Bone Density

    • Accutane can cause a decrease in bone density. For this reason, the Food and Drug Administration states that people who are involved in strenuous activities aren't ideal candidates for this drug. This long-term effect can also cause back pain and joint problems, including arthritis.

    Hearing and Vision Problems

    • People on Accutane may experience ringing in the ears or blurred vision while taking the medicine. These side effects may seem like a small price to pay for clearing up your acne. However, without proper treatment, these symptoms may become permanent. In fact, a decrease in night vision and deafness are usually permanent.

    Brain Problems

    • Accutane can cause swelling in the brain. In the most severe cases, this can lead to blindness, stroke or seizures. Symptoms such as recurring headaches, eye pain or dizziness should be reported immediately to your doctor.

    Organ Damage

    • If you notice your skin or eyes are yellowed or if you have severe throat or abdominal pain, contact your doctor at once. These are signs that your liver, pancreas, esophagus or intestines may be affected by the Accutane treatment. If the damage to these organs gets too bad, your organs may not recuperate.

    When Combined with Other Medications

    • The long-term effects of Accutane are increased when you take certain medications in conjunction with the Accutane. For example, taking tetracycline in conjunction with Accutane can cause increased brain pressure, which can cause lifelong complications.
