What Are Horoscopes?
People love reading the daily newspaper or monthly magazine for the latest horoscope prediction about their life. It's always fun to find out if you'll become a millionaire, find your true love, or having an exciting weekend with a mysterious stranger. But is there any truth to horoscopes, or are they simply a form of entertainment created as a way to help us daydream?

History
-
The use of horoscopes and astrology began with the ancient Greeks. They felt strongly that a person's life had a pre-set destiny, which was determined by the positioning of certain heavenly bodies including the sun, moon and stars at the time of their birth. As time wore on, different civilizations began using horoscopes as a means of predicting the future, and it has evolved into what we now know it to be.
The Basics
-
When a person is born, it's under a specific sign according to the time of her birth, date and year. For example, a Gemini is anyone who is born between the dates of May 21 and June 20. There are 12 signs that are all named after a constellation. When applied to a person, they tell their positive and negative traits, describe their temperament and who they may be compatible with. Though the signs are named after 12 constellations, they are assigned to the four elements: fire, earth, air and water.
-
Fire
-
Those who fall under the element of Fire are spontaneous and impulsive, and have quick emotional responses with lively imaginations. The signs included in this element include Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.
Earth
-
People considered to be in the Earth element are slow to react to situations and do so quietly. They apply themselves with endurance and are deep-rooted emotionally, being slow to change. The signs included in this element are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.
Air
-
These people are quick and animated, and apply their energy in diverse ways. They also enjoy expressing their feelings and expectations in an intellectual manner. The signs included in this group are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.
Water
-
Water people are sensitive when it comes to their feelings, yet their imaginations are deep and rich. Those in this group include Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
Accuracy
-
Though there are genuine astrologists in the United States, the horoscopes you read are mainly for entertainment only. A true horoscope is created by using the signs from the sun and the movements and alignments from the planets. Because each person's sign and astrological chart is different, horoscopes are only accurate for very few people. In addition, astrology readings, which are based on horoscopes, are complex. They can't be mass produced; they are individualized.
