Half Walls
-
Glass blocks are decorative building materials you can stack as high as you like to create a stationary room divider. The blocks offer some degree of privacy but still let light shine through from one room to the other. Half-wall room dividers can also be made from stone or Sheetrock stacked three to four feet high. Some decorating styles attach wooden spindles to the top of the Sheetrock wall that runs to the ceiling, further delineating the space.
Partitions and Screens
-
Freestanding partitions and screens made from metal, wood and fabric are simple and effective ways to divide a room. You can find these decorative three-part separators in you local home store. Asian-style screens made with silk fabrics add elegance to any room, while traditional wooden screens may include picture frames that you can fill with photographs or embellish with painted landscapes.

Furniture
-
Furniture can also act as a room divider if it is placed in the right space. A sofa in the middle of a room but facing one area effectively creates two distinct sections. The area in front of the sofa is a living space and the area behind the sofa may be a walkway or a dining room. If you have room to fit a sofa table with tall lamps behind the sofa you will create a more impressive room divider.
Stained-Glass Windows
-
Hang stained-glass windows from the ceiling to create a unique room divider that is sure to start a conversation. You can find antique stained-glass windows online or at local antique stores, or you can have windows custom-made by local artists. With or without wooden frames, these translucent glass beauties add color and dimension to your room. They also look lovely from both sides.
Framed Posters
-
Hang vintage posters in frames from your ceiling, similar to the stained glass. Two or three large frames with movie posters on both sides can be a whimsical way to divide your room. Create a special nook or separate a dining space with posters or drawings that can be appreciated from either side of the room divider.
