What Is Mucinex Expectorant For?

According to recent statistics, there are approximately 500 million people who experience respiratory infections each year. This leads to an increase in physician visits and health care costs in addition to a loss of income from missed days at work. It is also estimated that at least 28 million work days have been lost to Rhinitis (colds) alone. One popular over-the-counter products for respiratory conditions is Mucinex.

  1. Mucinex

    • Mucinex is made by Reckitt Benckiser Company and is available in tablet or liquid form and is approved by the FDA. Different types and strengths are available for children and adults. Mucinex reduces cough and congestion of the mucous membranes by thinning the mucous in order to expel it. The ingredient in Mucinex that make this possible is Guaifenesin. The dosage comes in two forms, one 600 mg tablet to be taken every 4 hours or one 12 mg tablet, which is the extra strength, to be taken every 12 hours.

    How Mucinex Works

    • Respiratory infections can be either chest congestion or nasal congestion or both. This is caused by a buildup of thick mucus, which you can't cough up or blow through the nose. Normal mucus membranes are thin and filter the air as we breathe. When toxins, germs, bacteria or seasonal allergies are introduced into the air we breathe, sometimes the bacteria settles in the nose or lungs and starts a thicker build up of mucus. Mucinex is an expectorant designed to rid the body of the excess mucus.

    Types of Mucinex

    • Mucinex tablets--blue and white tablets. One side is immediate release medication and the other side is extended release medication to give the user up to 12 hours of relief from congestion.
Mucinex DM tablets--Also extended release but also relieve chest congestion and controls coughing.
Mucinex D tablets--Relieves congestion in addition to relieving sinus pressure.
Mucinex Nasal Sprays--Relieves nasal congestion and sinus pressure with two different kinds of spray. Full Force Spray relieves congestion along with reducing sinus pressure. Moisture Smart spray is available for adding moisture to nasal membranes.
Mucinex Mini Melts--For children with a lower dose of medicine in easy to take flavored granules that are sprinkled on the tongue. The granules come in different flavors. The Mini Melts are given every 4 hours.

    Benefits

    • There is a Mucinex product for many different patient needs and is very effective for patients with respiratory infections, along with helping patients with chronic respiratory conditions. Chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic sinusitis patients benefit well with Mucinex by keeping the mucous build up at bay.

    Considerations

    • As with any medicine, be sure to check with your doctor to see if you are a candidate for the use of Mucinex.
