What Is Mucinex Expectorant For?
According to recent statistics, there are approximately 500 million people who experience respiratory infections each year. This leads to an increase in physician visits and health care costs in addition to a loss of income from missed days at work. It is also estimated that at least 28 million work days have been lost to Rhinitis (colds) alone. One popular over-the-counter products for respiratory conditions is Mucinex.

Mucinex is made by Reckitt Benckiser Company and is available in tablet or liquid form and is approved by the FDA. Different types and strengths are available for children and adults. Mucinex reduces cough and congestion of the mucous membranes by thinning the mucous in order to expel it. The ingredient in Mucinex that make this possible is Guaifenesin. The dosage comes in two forms, one 600 mg tablet to be taken every 4 hours or one 12 mg tablet, which is the extra strength, to be taken every 12 hours.
How Mucinex Works
-
Respiratory infections can be either chest congestion or nasal congestion or both. This is caused by a buildup of thick mucus, which you can't cough up or blow through the nose. Normal mucus membranes are thin and filter the air as we breathe. When toxins, germs, bacteria or seasonal allergies are introduced into the air we breathe, sometimes the bacteria settles in the nose or lungs and starts a thicker build up of mucus. Mucinex is an expectorant designed to rid the body of the excess mucus.
