Types of Chihuahua Mixes

When you mix two pure bred dogs of different breeds, you create a hybrid. The purpose of creating a hybrid is to pick two breeds that have different medical problems. In this way, the problems become dormant instead of dominant, and the puppies will not inherit conditions from either parent. These hybrids are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. They have their own organization, The American Canine Hybrid Club. These are a few of the popular Chihuahua mixes.

  1. Chion

    • The Chion is a mix of Chihuahua and Papillon, a mix of two affectionate and playful breeds. You do need to be on the lookout for problems with the eyes, gums and joints. Chions are also referred to as Papihuahua, Chi-a-Pap or Pap-Chi
The Chion is small--under 11 inches and under 10 pounds--and delicate, with a medium coat. Chions are not a good choice for young children.

    Chug

    • The Chug is a mix of Chihuahua and Pug. The Chug is an excellent watchdog and the dogs get along with most people and other animals. However, a Chug may not be a good idea if there are very small children in the home. Be watchful for eye and breathing problems. Their coats are more likely to be short, and one of their distinctive features is their muzzle, which is longer than a Pug's and shorter than a Chihumhua's

    Chorky or Chorkie

    • The Chorky or Chorkie is a mix of Yorkshire terrier and Chihuahua. Most Chorkies are first generation. The Chorky is smart and affectionate but does not do well with other animals, small children and strangers. The Chorky is also known as a Chia-Yorkie, Yorkie-Chi or Yorkiehuahua. The Chorky does not do well in cold temperatures, and the breed is susceptible to respiratory problems. Chorkies are very small, just about 7 pounds and 7 inches high, with medium to long hair.

    Wapoo

    • A Wapoo is a mix of Chihuahua and Poodle. Other names are Chipoo, Poochi, and Poo-Chi. In most cases, the coat will be long and curly in black white, tan or a combination of two or all three. A Wapoo is usually sized in between the two breeds, but the size and weight can vary greatly.

    Pomchi

    • The Pomchi is a mix of a Chihuahua and a Pomeranian. Other names are Chi-Pom and Chiranian. The Pomchi has a sweet disposition and can weigh between 5 and 12 pounds. The dogs are very alert and intelligent and make good watchdogs. They show off their Pomeranian heritage with the familiar ruff around the neck. The Pomchi can come in just about any color combination.
