What Are Tandem Bicycles?

A tandem bicycle is a kind of bicycle that accommodates more than one rider. A tandem bicycle is the term for a bicycle with the seats arranged in front and behind each other. Bicycles with seats that are beside each other for more than one rider are known as sociables.

  1. History

    • Tandem bicycles were invented at the end of the nineteenth century. Tandem bicycles of today have significantly improved technology, designs and components. They can be as high quality as other comparable modern single-rider bicycles.

    Riders

    • The front rider of a tandem bicycle is responsible for steering the bicycle for both riders. This rider is called the "captain." The back rider of a tandem bicycle is responsible for pedaling only. This rider is called the "stoker." Most tandem bicycles have the two crank systems turning together so that both riders are pedaling in unison.

    Features

    • Tandem bicycles hold added weight and therefore have more stress placed on some parts. Wheels of a tandem bicycle should have more spokes, the rims should be sturdier, and the tires should accommodate more pressure. Tandem bicycles typically wear out the back wheels faster than the front wheels. For this reason, sometimes the back wheels of a tandem bicycle are more sturdy than the front wheels.

    Function

    • A tandem bicycle can successfully be ridden by two riders possessing different levels of bicycling strength and endurance. The stronger rider is typically the captain and the weaker rider is typically the stoker. A tandem bicycle can be an enjoyable activity for a parent and child.

    Size

    • A tandem bicycle frame should fit both riders as well as possible. However, often this cannot be accomplished perfectly due to differences in height between the riders. If the riders are significantly different heights, the tandem bicycle should be fit to the captain.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Whie a captain tandem rider is growing comfortable riding a tandem bicycle, the captain should practice riding alone without a stoker. After the captain is comfortable and experienced, both riders should try riding together. The captain should be aware that when they are riding the tandem bicycle slowly, it will be more difficult to steer the bicycle. The key to successfully riding a tandem bicycle is for both riders to work together to build up speed as quickly and safely as possible.
