Environmental psychology examines the relationships between people and all types of environments, from home to work to community and beyond. Most environmental psychologists work in research at the university level, exploring which environmental conditions are most beneficial for people in various situations. The information then can be used for designing and maintaining environments and resolving problems.

University Opportunities

Environmental psychologists working at universities usually have a doctorate in psychology, although not environmental psychology, since the field is relatively new and these programs are still rare. Environmental psychologists teach and do research about human interaction with the environment. They evaluate how different environmental factors influence attitudes, behavior, interpersonal relationships and health. Research is conducted through interviews, and observing people in specific environments and noting their behavior.
Consulting

As interest in environmental psychology grows among business managers and others that deal with groups of people, more environmental psychologists act as consultants, working from the university or as independent contractors. Typically environmental psychology consultants work in a multidisciplinary team with professionals such as architects, interior designers, facilities managers and community development managers.

Environmental psychologists who consult in urban development often assist with the rejuvenation of inner cities and problem neighborhoods. They work on the best options for housing homeless people and people living in poverty, improving safety for children and adults, and enhancing a sense of community.
