Vet Tech Jobs in the Military
Military veterinary technicians are a vital part of the military mission. Military members are allowed to keep pets on military installations and in their homes out in town. Military veterinary technicians assist by keeping pets in good health. Military veterinary technicians also provide care for military working dogs used by military police officers, and for horses used in mounted military color guards and by military police.

Military veterinary technicians are enlisted members. A college degree is not required to become a veterinary technician, but a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
Education

After basic training, the member will attend a 12-week-long veterinary technician course. After completing this course, the member will then report to his permanent duty station, where he must be qualified on every job duty he is expected to perform. He cannot perform duties as a veterinary technician until he is re deemed fully qualified by the supervising veterinarian or lead veterinary technician.

Military veterinary technicians are not required to be certified or licensed by any governing body. Once they have completed formal training and on-the-job training, they are fully approved by the military to serve as a military veterinary technician.

The duties of a military veterinary technician are varied. Veterinary technicians assist the veterinarian in completing medical and surgical procedures. They may also perform euthanasia as authorized by the veterinarian. They will interview pet owners and determine what is wrong with an animal. They can take the animal's vital signs and administer medications to animals.
After the Military

A career as a military veterinary technician can translate to a lucrative career in the civilian veterinary field. These members can transition to the civilian sector as veterinary technicians or apply to a veterinary school. Many schools prefer veterinary students with prior military veterinary technician experience.
