About Laundry Room Organizers

Laundering has come a long way since the days your great-grandmothers cranked wet garments through their wringer washers and hung them to dry on clotheslines strung from trees. The laundry room is one of the most important areas, which women, in particular, notice when buying a home. Not only should it provide an area for laundering clothes, but it also should have enough room for storing, as well as organizing items before and after washing and drying. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Clotheslines or Laundry Belts

    • Clotheslines or drying belts are handy when your dryer doesn't work or you have too many clothes for a load and want to save on electricity. You can use a drying belt or clothesline to hang up shirts and other garments as you pull them out of the dryer to prevent wrinkling. Make sure when installing a clothesline or belt that it's in an area that won't entrap moisture.

    Cabinets

    • Besides storing detergents, cabinets can be used for organizing bleach, washing powders and other laundry products. Baskets for organizing and storing both clean and dirty clothes can be included in contemporary cabinets, rendering a tidy appearance for a laundry room. Before selecting cabinets, measure your laundry area as well, as consider the décor of your laundry room. This way you'll be able to choose the right cabinet material, selecting from veneer, laminate or melamine.

    Shelves

    • If you have a growing family, shelves and cabinets provide extra storage and prevent laundry from overflowing. In addition to adding space, wire shelving provides a place to fold laundry and hang garments. Wire baskets are ideal for sorting underwear and socks before putting them in drawers.

    Sorting Organizers

    • Traditionally, laundry tables have been used for clothes sorting. Today there are various alternatives, such as portable clothes butlers, folding laundry valets, over-the-door organizers and other systems used for sorting.

    Rolling Carts

    • A rolling cart is a helpful device for transporting folded laundry to drawers and closets. When it's not being used for moving clothing, you can use it to store and organize laundry items, such as stain sticks, lint sheets and fabric softeners. Some rolling carts have an extended pole and bar for hanging clothing.

    Laundry Sinks & Basins

    • A laundry sink and basin can let you hand-wash laundry items that can't be washed in machines. It's useful in washing your hands and rinsing out items such as measuring cups. Include shelving under the sink and a soap dispenser, increasing the value of your laundry room.

    Considerations

    • If you have a small laundry room, cabinets may take up too much space. However, you can install wall cabinets, placing supplies including detergents, fabric softeners and bleaches away from the counter, allowing you to work freely. Wall cabinets are safe, because they keep small children away from laundry supplies.
