Paramedic Training in England

A paramedic is a professional who provides emergency medical services. Paramedics are often the ones who provide advanced assistance, such as stabilization and transportation, before a patient reaches the hospital. In England, the law requires applicants to pass a series of tests and be registered in order to earn the title of paramedic.

  1. Basics

    • England is different from most other countries in that there is technically only one title level given to paramedics. However, most paramedics opt to take further training. Once they have taken the necessary educational courses, paramedics can go on to critical care and emergency care. In some instances, paramedics can also practice as forensic medical examiners in England.

    Skills

    • Because transportation is one of the most important jobs tasked to paramedics, they are trained in how to handle the spine in cases of injury. Assessment and splinting are also important in the event a patient has broken bones. In addition to the management of the patient, paramedics in England must also know how to evaluate accident locations in order to determine whether a scene is safe enough to enter. Paramedics should also know how to record and write reports on the incidents that they respond to.

    Advanced Life Support

    • Advanced Life Support courses teach students how to handle cardio-respiratory arrest and similar situations before the patient can be transported to an intensive-care area. This course can be quite intensive, as it relates to life-saving techniques. In England, once certification is given, those who pass this course are allowed to practice for four years before renewal is required.

    Paramedic Degree

    • Paramedic degrees offered by institutions in England require individuals to finish both practical and theoretical assessments required by the Health Professional Council and Institute of Healthcare Development. Other requirements to earn the degree include clearance by the Criminal Records Bureau and a driver's license valid in England.

    Locations

    • The traditional way of becoming a paramedic in England used to be to join an ambulance service and work for the emergency division. Eventually, the Institute of Healthcare Development began to accredit training establishments to teach paramedic courses until universities in England began offering diplomas in the 1990s.
Many institutions all over the world offer paramedic courses. People from England may choose to train in other countries; however, they must get the proper license to practice in England. For those who want an education closer to home, there are plenty of universities, such as the University of Hertforshire and the University of Coventry, that offer training. The length of time in training varies and may run from three to four years.
