About Paraplegic Support Groups in Columbus, Ohio

With fewer than 1 million citizens, Columbus is one of the United States' smaller capitals, and it does not, as of April 2009, have any support groups particularly for paraplegics. This does not mean, however, that paraplegics in the Columbus area are without resources and community. A combination of web-based groups and support and activity groups in the Columbus area can offer a sense of community.

  1. Mental Health Association of Franklin County

    • The Mental Health Association of Franklin County offers two support groups that offer everyone, including paraplegics, mental-health support.
      Depression Support Group is a peer-run support group for people struggling with depression in Franklin County, which includes Columbus. It meets on the first and third Mondays of each month, between 7 and 8:30 pm.
      Families in Touch, is a self-help group for families and friends of adults with mental illnesses. There are many Families in Touch group meetings within Columbus: check Resources for details.

    Fore Hope

    • Fore Hope is an organization in Columbus, Ohio, that focuses on golf for people with physical disabilities or inactive lifestyles. Paraplegics are welcome.

    Adaptive Adventure Sports Coalition

    • TAASC, The Adaptive Adventure Sports Coalition, is a not-for-profit organization based 20 miles outside Columbus, in Powell, that coordinates adventure activities for the physically disabled. Though it is not a support group or specifically for paraplegics, paraplegics are welcome and will have the opportunity to meet with other physically disabled people and caregivers in Columbus.

    Care Pages

    • Care Pages was formed by the Ohio State University Medical Center as a website to assist patients, caregivers, friends, family and allies in staying connected and forming communities. There is no charge to create and search web pages, and there is an active online forum where people with disabilities and illnesses are free to meet and converse in an unmediated environment. Paraplegics in the Columbus area are free to start their own forum or webpage via Care Pages.

    Ohio Governor's Council on People With Disabilities

    • The Ohio Governor's Council on People With Disabilities is a fairly active group, meeting at least every two months and often once a month. It focuses on education, advocacy and educating the governor and general assembly on disability issues. For callers within Ohio with questions and comments, there is a toll-free hotline.

    Apparelyzed Online Community on Spinal-Cord Injuries

    • Apparelyzed, an international online community focused on spinal-cord injuries, has an online forum with a variety of discussion threads covering everything from legal issues to vacation and travel. One community is focused on new spinal-cord injuries and questions and answers about the topic. It acts similarly to a peer-run support group. This is the most applicable online support group for paraplegics and their care-givers in Columbus, Ohio.
