Pregnancy should be a very happy time, but sometimes pregnancy can bring about ailments that can be hard on the mother. During pregnancy the body is working hard to nourish and develop a baby. As this happens, the mother can become depleted of certain essential nutrients that are also needed for healthy joints. DHA is an essential fatty acid that helps the brain to function and lubricates the joints. During pregnancy the body uses DHA to develope a baby. This nutrient is especially important for proper brain development.

From Quick Guide: Joint Pain Basics

    Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  1. Some women develop carpal tunnel syndrome temporarily during pregnancy. Some of the main signs of carpal tunnel are tingling and numbness in the hands and wrists. Pressure from swelling and fluid retention is thought to be the main cause. The symptoms typically go away after the baby is born.
  2. Pelvic Joint Pain

  3. Pelvic joint pain is common during pregnancy, especially during the last trimester. During the eighth and ninth month a hormone called relaxin helps to relax the muscles and ligaments in the pelvis. This hormone along with the weight of the baby can cause pelvic joint pain. If the pain becomes too must, rest often and drink plenty of fluids.
  4. Supplements and Lifestyle

  5. There are many things that a woman can do to combat joint pain during pregnancy. Taking DHA and fish oil supplements have been shown to help replace those essential fatty acids. These supplements can also help to improve mood and brain function during pregnancy. Drinking a lot of water has also been shown to reduce joint pain during pregnancy. Taking pre-natal vitamins, in addition to extra calcium, can also help to reduce inflammation.
  6. Fitness

  7. Swimming can help to alleviate joint pain during pregnancy. The water can take pressure off the joints and muscles, making you feel almost weightless. The water can be relaxing and when the water is warm it can soothe tired muscles. Practicing yoga can help a pregnant woman to experience less joint pain and become more limber.
  8. Chiropractic Care

  9. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can also be very helpful when it comes to joint pain. Chiropractors can also help to align the spine so that the baby moves into the proper position for birth. These treatments can also help to improve circulation throughout the entire body. Being properly aligned can help a pregnant woman in many ways. She will feel better, be less nauseous, and move better.
