The bodies of pregnant women undergo a number of changes, most visibly an expanding stomach. To accommodate the widening of their waistlines during gestation, women turn to specially-made maternity clothing. The structure of pants and tops is altered so that the belly is properly covered and supported. Maternity clothes are sold at both regular and specialty stores, but you can also buy or borrow secondhand pieces as a cost-cutting measure.

    Function

  1. Maternity clothing allows women to comfortably wear clothing throughout their pregnancy. Each piece of clothing is generously cut to allow for an expanding belly and ensure full coverage. The extra material accommodates a woman's changing body shape and avoids putting too much pressure on the stomach. Normally-cut garments do not have enough give, and tight clothing can cut off circulation if swelling occurs.
  2. Time Frame

  3. Clothing made for pregnant women can be worn throughout the gestation period, particularly the kind that expands with the abdomen. Most women start to need maternity clothing at the end of the first trimester, while others want more comfortable clothing earlier in their pregnancies. It's up to the individual to determine when she'll need maternity clothing, and the size of the stomach indicates whether larger sizes are needed.
  4. Types

  5. Garments made for pregnant women include dresses, pants, shirts, pajamas, underwear and bathing suits. Clothing doesn't have to be purchased only in the maternity section--try going up a size or two in pants and tops, or choose loose, flowing blouses to cover your stomach. Special shoes are not needed, but pregnant women may feel more comfortable in flats or sneakers rather than in shoes with heels.
  6. Effects

  7. Different materials are used in maternity clothing to allow for stretching during the latter stages of pregnancy. Spandex is commonly found in maternity pants. It is incorporated into a smooth tummy panel that replaces the button and zipper fly of everyday jeans and pants. Despite their different shape, maternity clothes are just as fashionable as regular clothes. Be aware that regular-cut garments are not the same as maternity-wear--larger sizes will not fit properly.
  8. Considerations

  9. Instead of buying new maternity clothing, ask friends who have had children if they have any hand-me-downs to save the expense of buying a new wardrobe for the limited time you'll be pregnant. Also, check out secondhand and thrift stores for gently used pieces. If you plan to have more than one child, keep your maternity clothes for the next pregnancy.
