About Fishing Boats

If you've ever decided to fish from a boat, chances are that you were on a commercial charter, a dinghy, or a canoe. Catching fish for your vacation dinner can be done on one of those. However, for those who fish as a profession, there are several other decked boats that can be as large as an ocean liner and can catch thousands of fish per day. This article will describe different types of fishing boats.

  1. Trawler

    • A trawler is typically a fishing boat that incorporates dragging a large net along the sea bed to catch fish. Trawls are also sometimes used in midwater. Commercial trawlers can also operate in pairs, with two boats supporting a large trawl net in between them. Beam trawlers use a large, metal beam that supports an open-mouthed net. Outrigger trawlers use booms to either side of the boat that support the net.

    Line Vessel

    • Fishing with a line vessel is like having thousands of men fishing at the same time off of one large, moving pier. Line vessels use hundreds of baited hooks that drop at various sea levels, depending on the intended catch. Each branch of lines (called snoods), will have buoys attached to them that help indicate the depth of their drop.

    Seiner

    • A seine net is a large net that is dropped vertically in the water. Seiner boats support these nets, using special beams that can adjust the angle of the drop. Seiners typically must find shallow enough shoals to drop the seine nets into. They must also determine what direction the fish are moving in so that the seine net can drop at the proper angle.

    Artisan Boats

    • Artisan fishing is small-scale fishing from smaller vessels such as aluminum dinghies or catamarans. Artisan fishing is typically done by families who rely on fish for consumption or income. Boats are usually designed for adaptation to their surroundings. For example, the Filipino banca boat has two outriggers for better balance while fishing in rough waves near shallow waters.

    Charter Boats

    • Charter fishing boats can go into freshwater rivers or deep ocean seas. Charter boats are usually for hire by a group of recreational fishers. They board the boat and use the crew to help them catch fish with either their own poles or the boat's fishing equipment. Boat crews can take the hassle out of the fishing by bringing the customers out, helping them catch the fish, and cleaning them before the trip is over.
