About Medical Sales Jobs

Medical sales jobs represent a rapidly growing segment of the job market. Virtually no career is recession proof, but the United States Department of Labor notes that health-related careers are a solid and sustainable choice for the future workforce. Adults trained in medical sales can find work in the health care industry.

  1. What Is a Medical Sales Representative?

    • The sale and marketing of pharmaceutical and medical products offers a career with security. Major health-care related companies and small businesses both require sales professionals in order to move products and services.

Careers in medical sales do require at least a basic knowledge of the health care field. Many employers offer training programs for new hires, but expect some background or coursework in medical-related services in order to qualify for a position. Clinical studies, access to medical journals and trade magazines are also provided through participation in the National Association of Medical Sales Representatives (NAMSR).

    Medical Sales Career Training

    • NAMSR provides training, certification, employment counseling, continuing education, career nights, general industry information and details pertaining to specific positions related to health care. Students must be at least 21 years old in order to participate in training. Previous college-level classes are encouraged before enrolling in the class. Tuition for entry-level training is typically $225 per course.

A beginning course, often referred to as the non-experienced medical sales representative foundation course, serves as a building block for students new to the health care industry. Completion of the course will make new medical sales representatives more attractive to prospective employers. Successful students are awarded a certificate upon completion of the program.

The mid-career medical sales representative can benefit from continuing education courses in sales related to health care. A minimum of two years on-the-job experience is a prerequisite for this course. This training focuses on increased sales and productivity, and the newest medical devices and pharmacy products. The curriculum includes coursework in key selling techniques, developing stronger accounts, understanding and relating to the customer base, and negotiating and closing skills. Customer relationship management is one of the most important sections of this training course.

Medical Sales Management Careers and Training

    • A sales management training course is designed to further a sales representative's career. Regional and corporate sales manager positions require expanded on-the-job experience and college-level training. Students who participate in this course will be instructed on managerial aspects such as revenue development, customer service, marketing and creating sales plans and goals.

    Medical Sales Specialty Fields

    • The leading medical sales jobs focus on noninvasive medical devices. Sales staff will work with stores and individuals to provide information related to products and services provided by the company or manufacturer. Diabetic testing devices, catheters and home oxygen devices are some of the top-selling noninvasive medical device products typically marketed by medical sales professionals.

Clinical application specialists are also in high demand. Medical sales professionals work closely with health care providers, nursing home administrators and patients.

Additional medical sales careers include marketing and promoting Holigic diagnostic sales, Cytyc sales, medical device interventional products and services, OR and wound closure, surgical sales, spine sales, neuro sales, DME and orthopedic equipment sales, thoracic draining systems sales, ultrasound and assisted wound sales, pharmaceutical and container sales, connectivity systems sales, Medtronic coronary sales, CRDM sales and clinical business manager positions.

Medical Sales Recruiting and Online Resources

    • Employment recruiting sites and online training are also available for adult learners. Novice sales representatives or those considering entering the lucrative field can benefit from online learning and career assistance.
