History
-
The area of international online tutoring jobs is, quite obviously, not an old one. The first online tutors began popping up in the mid-'90s, their numbers increasing greatly into the mid-'00s. As Internet technology improved, the variety---and number---of international online tutoring jobs also grew. Once the Internet became widely available all over the world, including in Internet cafes in small towns and villages across Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America, the demand for tutors, especially language tutors, increased dramatically. Today, literally thousands of tutors and literally millions of potential students utilize the Internet as their classroom.
Types
-
When it comes to international online tutoring jobs, there are many types. The most common on the Internet, almost certainly, is the language tutor, particularly the English-language tutor. This puts English speakers in an advantageous position, especially native English speakers who have some sort of university education. A wide variety of other fields also employ the Internet as a tutoring tool, including traditional high school subjects like history, geometry, trigonometry, and physics, Internet-related topics like HTML or Javascript, and random areas like keyboarding skills or personal finance.

Function
-
The purpose of international online tutoring jobs is, for the tutors, to provide a global platform through which to tutor your students. This removes barriers associated with geography---and even time, since the Internet is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week---and opens up the market for your skills to the world at large. International online tutoring jobs are a fantastic way to interact with fellow citizens of the world---and earn income at the same time. Some international online tutors use their tutoring position as their primary source of income, while others use it to supplement their income.
Tools
-
A variety of tools are available to those seeking international online tutoring jobs. The most basic---and perhaps the most powerful---is the search engine. Typically, using a search term like, for example, "online English tutoring" returns plentiful results. Tutoring communities and networks online are also helpful tools, linking potential tutors with potential students around the world. Some of these are free, while others charge a small fee. Personal ads are also regularly employed, with the tutor advertising her or her skills and rates online (either on a personal website or on a job board or other employment site) or the student seeking a tutor in a "Help Wanted" ad.
Challenges
-
International online tutoring jobs don't come without their fair share of challenges. In such situations, tutors and students operate in different time zones---and these times need to be coordinated, which can be tricky. Payment can be an issue, since, typically, there is no way for the tutor to collect his or her earnings except by trusting that the student will pay up. Communication problems associated with bad Internet connections, language or cultural barriers, old software, or faulty hardware, can also be a frustration---one that a traditional face-to-face tutor would never really encounter.
