About Hunting & Trapping Supplies

Hunting and trapping are professions that go back centuries. When it comes to hunting and trapping most people think of the frontiersman of the early 1800s out in the American West. But hunting and trapping traditions still go on today. Though more people do use them as hobbies rather than for a living. However, wild game is still in demand by some for fur and meat. Furthermore, given all the advances in modern technology, little has changed. Hunting and trapping still put man and his skill against animals and their instincts and senses.

      • The supplies you use for hunting will depend on the game you are after, the season and the locale in which you hunt. For most people, hunting involves a firearm. For gun hunters, there are the two basic choices: rifle or shotgun. Rifles are better for big game like deer and elk. Shotguns are more commonly used for small game like varmints, ducks and pheasants. However, in some locations, rifle hunting is prohibited due to the flat terrain and the fact that a rifle round could travel a long distance before stopping. In these situations, deer hunters may opt for shotguns with "slug barrels." A slug is a shotgun round with a single ball or "slug" as opposed to buckshot. Also, for those hunters who would like to truly do things the way they were done centuries ago, there are modern muzzle loaders just like the early hunters used.

      Basic Trapping Supplies

      • Where the hunter depends on his gun or bow, the trapper of course relies on traps. Like choosing the right firearm, choosing the right trap will depend on the game you seek, the location in which you trap and the season. Duke Traps has been manufacturing traps since 1938 and have a wide variety of traps for all needs. Duketraps.com says that long spring traps are used for small game like minks, raccoons, or foxes, and have been in use since the 1800's. Coil spring traps, which are also good for small animals have been in use since the early twentieth century and are the most commonly used today.
Fleming Outdoors says that the body trap is most effective for capturing and dispatching beavers. Duke Traps says that Federal and state wildlife officials use this trap for beaver population control and is considered the most humane method of trapping. It is most effectively used near water and on paths where beavers or other small animals commonly travel. But Duke Taps says that a responsible trapper will set this trap far away from where domestic animals may roam.
For those who need to live trap an animal without harming it, door cage traps are available. With these traps, a trapper places a bit of food for bait in it and when the animal takes the bait, the trap door falls closed.

      Baits, Lures and Calls

      • If you're going to set a trap, especially a cage trap, you need bait to draw the animal in. There are a number of prepackaged baits available from hunting and trapping suppliers.
Most baits available for predators are made up of mixed meats. Instead of buying some prepackaged baits, you may want to use your own raw meat to lure foxes and coyotes. Another way to lure you prey in is to appeal to his drive to mate instead of his stomach. Many hunting and trapping suppliers sell bottled urine that has pheromones which signal a female who is in heat. The male will smell this and follow the scent to the hunter or the trap.
Another tactic employed by hunters is to use a call which imitates the sound of the animal you're hunting. Calls may be standard or electronic. Electronic calls have pre-programmed calls and cries that can be used to lure an animal to an area to "check out" a mating call. Some calls will elicit a response cry from the hunted animal so that a hunter can locate it by sound.

      Dressing for Success

      • There are a number of different clothing outfitters like Mossy Oak and Cabela's that can help the hunter or trapper stay well dressed for the woods. Some hunting and trapping seasons occur in the late fall and early winter which means that you need to stay warm and dry. Modern hunting apparel is made to wick sweat away to keep you dry as well as warm. Camouflage patterns are also sophisticated. Some camouflage apparel is even made with 3D effects that have "leaves" that blow in the wind for helping the hunter blend in with his environment. And if you're hunting, don't forget that most states require hunters to wear blaze orange for safety.

      Gear Maintenance

      • Hunting and trapping are expensive undertakings that require a lot of gear. Your gear will need to be properly maintained throughout the year if you want it to serve you well during the hunting and trapping seasons. Guns and traps need to be cleaned and oiled before putting away. If you camp when you hunt, then you will need to clean your tent, sleeping bag and other supplies.
