About Lamp-Making Kits

Have a particular type of lamp in mind for your living room makeover? Something unusual, an odd shape, a vintage collectible, a particular high-priced piece you want to copy and put your own style into? Want to make your own lamp, but confused about what's involved? Lamp making is an art form that has been approached by all skill levels. Even the experts use lamp-making kits when assembling their masterpieces. What are lamp-making kits and do they hold everything you need for your lamp-making project? Does this Spark an idea?

  1. What Is In A Lamp-Making Kit?

    • Lamp-making kits can be found in most craft stores, hardware stores, construction supply outlets and lamp shops. They may also be called lamp-wiring kits. Lamp-making kits can vary in contents. Depending on the manufacturer, lamp-making kits come with a lamp socket, which is for the light bulb, a lamp cord with plug, which is usually attached to the lamp socket, a neck, which is used to attach the lamp kit to the lamp stem or stand that you provide and a harp with finial to attach the lampshade.

    Types Of Lamp-Making Kits

    • Manufacturers recognize that certain types of lamps may require a special type of lamp kit in order to work properly. They take into consideration the shape of the base and materials being used when they create these special lamp-making kits. It is possible to find lamp kits for the following types of lamps--jug or canning jar lamps, bottle lamps, oil lamps, planter lamps, basket lamps, flower pot lamps and birdhouse lamps.

What Is Not In A Lamp Kit?

    • Lamp-making kits provide the craftsman with the electrical components needed for lamp making. They do not usually provide the actual focal point of the lamp--the pottery, the jar, or the birdhouse. Lampshades are the other item you will not usually see in a lamp-making kit. Lampshade frames and fabrics are not part of the lamp kit. In addition, the lamp kit may or may not provide the appropriate stem needed for your particular type of lamp. Lamp-making kits rarely provide light bulbs.

What About Floor Lamps And Lamp Making Kits?

    • Cord lengths can vary by lamp-making kit manufacturer. The cord may or may not be long enough for the floor lamp you are designing. If you are not satisfied with what is available, here are some suggestions for your floor lamp project. Look for a "floor base" instead of a lamp making kit. Floor bases usually come with the electrical attached. All you provide is the lamp shade. Reclaim or reuse an existing floor base and learn how to lengthen a lamp cord.

Replacing Parts In A Lamp-Making Kit

    • Each part in a lamp-making kit can be purchased and replaced separately. Any home improvement store, lamp store, craft or hardware store will have replacement parts. If possible bring the item, or a photo of the item, with you. This saves time and explanation when you are not familiar with lamp-making vocabulary.
