According to Alessandri & Company, Chilean copyright attorneys, Law 17,336 provides legal protection to authors or writers in Chile concerning their creative or intellectual works. Included under this protection of intellectual property are musical works. Both types of intellectual property are protected from someone other than the works' creator reproducing, giving public execution or public display of the works without the author or musician's consent. In addition intellectual copyright protection covers instruments and business tools related to acquisitions and mergers.
Trademark

Registering a trademark in Chile can take an average of three months from the start of the process until the trademark is officially registered. Attorneys meet with persons interested in registering a trademark to review all legal steps involved in the process. In order to sell a product outside of Chile, the product's creator will need to obtain an international patent in addition to getting a Chilean trademark. Before the trademark is final, the product's owner or creator must post an announcement in the local newspaper. If there are no other claims that the product belongs to another individual, the brand or trademark is generally approved.

Persons who create software must complete and submit an application then provide confirmation to the Sub Secretary of Economy that they meet all requirements in the law around software copyright. Law number 19.799 recognizes and speaks to electronic contracts. The law specifically deals with electronic contract signatures, certification services and related duties and liabilities.

The Protection of the Denominations of Origin and its Registry provides legal protection for copyrighted Chilean domain names in the international arena. In this regard, the International office of the OMPI fills the role of the organization administrator and receives and responds to copyright request for domain names.
