ISSA stand for the International Sports Science Association. This organization was formed in 1988. It has been offering the certified fitness trainer program for 20 years and has over 120,000 students.

Under the category of certified personal trainer, ISSA offers a certified fitness trainer course. This course can be taken entirely online and they also offer an option of attending a 2-day seminar. If you have no education or experience in the fitness industry, this certification may not provide you with all of the information you need to work with a variety of clients.

Course Materials and Time Frame

ISSA offers a fitness book, study guides, videos and online resources to help you learn the material. Because this is a home study course, you can set your own pace for learning. However, to complete the certification you need to submit all quizzes within 2 years of registering for the course. According to ISSA, the majority of students take 6 months to 1 year to complete the course.
Requirements and Cost

The ISSA certified fitness trainer course costs approximately $600. If you take a seminar as well, there is an additional $150 charge. To pass, you must take and submit several online quizzes and a final exam with a passing grade of at least 75 percent. In order to receive your certificate, you must also show proof that you are certified in CPR.
Warnings

While this course may give students a basic knowledge of fitness, it is a strictly online course. This means you receive no formal training in working with clients in person. Many employers do not hire trainers with online certifications for this reason. Also, keep in mind that you are receiving a certified fitness instructor diploma not a certified personal trainer diploma.
