About Meditation Tables

A meditation table is a small table or chest, frequently made of wood, that is used in the practice of Buddhist meditation.

  1. What is a Meditation Table?

    • A meditation table, also know as a puja or prayer or practice table, is a small, functional altar-like piece of furniture that is an accoutrement to seated Buddhist meditation practice.

    Uses of A Puja Table

    • A meditation, puja or prayer table is a place of focus in the home for contemplation and meditation and is used by practitioners to display and store practice materials such texts, candles, incense and other personal spiritual items.

    Historical Origins

    • Prayer or practice tables are based on the traditional Tibetan tea table. These tables were used by the nomadic Tibetan tribes and are still used by Tibetan lamas. If you ever see a pictures of His Holiness the Dalai Lama sitting in lotus, he is likely to be seated in front of a meditation table.

    Design & Size

    • A good meditation practice table, or puja-prayer table, supports meditation from multiple angles and is large enough to hold all personal practice materials--texts, candles, incense--on its top when those items are in use. Often, meditation tables have a single drawer or multiple drawers in which to store practice items when they are not in use. Puja tables come in many shapes and sizes but are typically a rectangular, altar shape and stand between 15 inches to 25 inches high. They are often adjustable in height in order to bring study texts and other practice items to an individual's eye level when in a seated meditative pose. They can also be collapsible and portable for either storage or transportation.

    Material Used

    • Mediation-practice-puja-prayer tables are almost always crafted of some type of wood. They can be painted or in stained natural wood tones. They can be made of any material and various other furniture items can be adapted for this purpose.
