About Internet Explorer Themes

Internet Explorer is Microsoft's Web browser with a functional and somewhat lackluster user interface. Rather than put up with the same Web browser that your boss, your aunt, and your bank manager use, you could opt to change the "theme" of Internet Explorer to better reflect your personality. Knowing a little bit more about Internet Explorer themes can help you personalize your Internet surfing portal in no time.

  1. What it is

    • An Internet Explorer (IE) theme is a set of colors, icons and text that make the Web browser look different from its default setting. The most recent IE default theme is a spartan affair with a couple of arrows that turn blue as your navigation progresses, a "search" window and a few other icons representing certain functions.

    Internet Explorer Tools

    • The easiest way to customize Internet Explorer is to add or remove tools to your basic IE interface. Simply click on the little "Wrench" (it should say "Adjust Toolbar Options" when your mouse hovers over it for a second or two) icon on the toolbar and you will gain access to other features and functions that you can use to customize your IE theme. This will not change the default colors, but will add extra functionality.

    Brand New Look

    • Even with the addition of extra tools, your IE may still look drab. Another way to improve it is by downloading a "skin" for your IE browser. There are literally thousands of skins (small programs that change the look, color or layout of IE) available. Most are very easy to download and require a few short clicks to make a dramatic improvement over the original IE theme. These products are from third -arty developers and are not offered by Microsoft (see Resources, below) and their instructions should be read thoroughly before use.

    New IE

    • There are constant updates to Internet Explorer that come directly from Microsoft. Improved versions are frequent enough that you can change versions, and thus change themes, relatively frequently. Always check with Microsoft's official Website for new versions of Internet Explorer (see Resources, below) if you tire of the old browser's look.

    Caution

    • As with any change in your operating system or to any program, be prepared to experience some problems. Most of the time, there is no problem associated with downloading third-party themes for Internet Explorer (the Websites would not be in business for long if there were), but sometimes unforeseen accidents may occur. This may require you re-load Internet Explorer, but since IE is freely available from Microsoft's official Website, there should be no problem with that.
