Recipes for Diabetic Teens

Diabetic teens face a challenge that other teens and children do not. Many of the foods that children commonly love to eat and are usually served are unsuitable for the diabetic teen. Recipes that are designed for diabetic teens are low in sugar or sugar free, and have low quantities of salt. These recipes are designed to help the diabetic teen feel like he can still eat some of the same items as his non-diabetic friends. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Features

    • Most diabetic recipes and food items are designed to eliminate most of the sugar that is commonly placed in many popular food items. Only someone who is watching for the sugar and other nutritional ingredients in foods knows how frustrating it is to try to find regular food that a diabetic teen can eat. Most products contain large amounts of sugar that can be dangerous for a diabetic teen. These alternative recipes can be made in a way that will give the correct nutrition to the diabetic teen.

    Lunch

    • Lunch for the diabetic teen doesn't have to be all carrot sticks and celery. A personal pizza can be made from English muffins, Italian seasoning, sodium-free tomato sauce and skim milk cheese. Place toppings on an English muffin and broil until the cheese starts to brown. Chips and queso can be made with fat-free or reduced fat processed cheese such as Velveeta, chunky salsa and fat-free tortilla chips. Melt the cheese and salsa together until smooth, then pour it over the chips.

    Dinner

    • Dinner doesn't have to be boring, either. Turkey wraps can be made with fat-free tortillas, fat-free or reduced-fat shredded cheese, low-fat turkey breast, lettuce and Dijon mustard. Spread mustard on the tortilla and pile on the other ingredients. Roll and cut it in half. Brisket makes a good meal for a diabetic teen's supper if there is no sugar in the barbecue sauce and if low-fat meat is used.

    Breakfast

    • There are many different breakfast options for the diabetic teen. A great on-the-go breakfast consists of half a banana, 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1 orange, and 1/4 cup strawberries or raspberries in a blender. An alternative to blueberry pancakes includes no-fat pancake mix, low-fat milk and sugar-free syrup. Cinnamon buns can be made with a package of butter buds dry mix, 1/4 cup water, 3 tbsp. brown sugar and a can of refrigerated biscuits. Mix everything together except the biscuits in an 8-inch round pan. Place the biscuits on top of the mixture and bake them at 375 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes.

    Snacks

    • Frozen, yogurt-covered bananas are a great snack option for diabetic teens. They can even make a root beer float if fat-free, no-sugar-added ice cream is used with sugar-free root beer.
