Long after pimples have faded, scars may linger, serving as a constant reminder of the acne that once plagued a person's face. Pimple scars do more than just remind a person about acne, however. They can also be damaging to a person's self-esteem, causing her to feel less confident about facing the world.

From Quick Guide: All About Acne

    Injections

  1. If you have scars left over from pimples, you don't have to resign yourself to a lifetime of living with them. There are some procedures that can get rid of the scars left from acne. One such procedure involves collagen or fat infections, which are usually used on pitted scars. For this procedure, a doctor injects collagen under the patient's skin. This fills the scarred area in, but the effects are only temporary. To maintain less noticeable scars, a person will need to repeat the injections on a regular basis.
  2. Removal of Skin Cells

  3. Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion may also be used to deal with pimple scarring. When a person opts for dermabrasion -- often used for severe cases -- a rotating brush is used to remove the top layer of skin. This gets rid of surface scarring and makes deeper scarring harder to see. Microdermabrasion involves the use of crystals to abrade the skin, after which a tube is used to vacuum up the crystals and the removed skin cells. This method provides more subtle scar removal, but it may not remove the entire scar.
  4. Laser Resurfacing

  5. Laser resurfacing is another treatment method that may be used to deal with pimple scars. This treatment uses a laser beam to kill the top layer of skin while also heating the layer beneath it. A wound is left behind from this treatment, which eventually heals, bringing new skin to the forefront.
  6. Surgery

  7. In some cases, a minor surgical procedure may be used to get rid of pimple scars. This procedure is referred to as a punch excision. When a person opts for this treatment method, scars are individually cut out of the skin. There is a hole left behind, which is closed using stitches or skin grafts.
  8. Prevention

  9. While you cannot avoid some types of pimple scars, there are some you can prevent. Many people feel compelled to squeeze their pimples in the hopes that doing so will make them go away faster or appear less noticeable. However, squeezing pimples is unlikely to make them go away faster, and it may actually cause them to become reddened, inflamed and more noticeable. Furthermore, squeezing is a recipe for dark marks and scarring.
