Pregnancy Growth & Stages

A pregnancy goes through many growth stages for both the mother to be and the child within. From the very beginning of conception to the day of delivery, there are very distinct changes. Even up until the end of your pregnancy, your body and the developing fetus will experience these growth changes and stages of pregnancy.

  1. Month 1 & 2

    • Although the pregnant body changes from the minute of conception, symptoms are usually not felt by the woman until about the sixth week. At the second month, five to eight weeks into the pregnancy your baby's size is about half an inch long. As far as the size of your belly, you'll notice that your pants are a bit snug and you may need to shop for a larger bra at this time. By the time this month is up, your uterus is the size of a grapefruit.

    Month 3

    • In the third month, weeks nine to 13, your baby is officially called a fetus. Before this time he was known medically as an embryo. The fetus is now one inch in length and is developing his muscles so that he can move his legs and arms. Your waistline will definitely begin to thicken. This is due to the growth of the uterus which is now larger than a grapefruit.

    Month 4

    • The fourth month is weeks 14 to 17. At this stage your child is now the size of your fist. Your growing uterus is as big as a small melon. You should be able to notice it now from the outside.

    Month 5

    • At the 18th week, which represents the beginning of the fifth month, your baby is about five and a half inches long and weighs about five ounces. Your baby now is able to yawn and hiccup. Up till this time you can hide the fact that you are pregnant. By the end of this month in your 22nd week, the secret will reveal itself.

    Month 6

    • In the beginning of the sixth month, week 23, your baby is eight inches long and weighs over a pound. By the 27th week, your baby's weight will double. At this beginning of this month, your uterus is above your belly button by an inch and a half, and two and a half by the end of the month.

    Month 7

    • By the seventh month, week 28, your baby is two and a half pounds and almost 16 inches long. The top of your uterus is 11 inches from your pubic bone. At week 31, your uterus can be felt above your belly button as far up as four and a half inches.

    Month 8 & 9

    • By the 32nd week, or the eighth month, your baby is about four pounds and 19 inches long. By the end of this month, the 35th week, or she reaches about five and a half pounds and 20 inches long. At the 34th week, your uterus is 34 centimeters long. At the 36th week, your baby is probably about six pounds and 20 inches tall. By the time of the 40th week your baby can weigh anywhere from six to nine and measure 19 to 22 inches long. Feeling your uterus right under your ribs, it measures anywhere from 38 to 40 centimeters in length from the top to the pubic bone.
