About Laser Acne Treatment

Acne is the term used for blemishes found on the skin. Clogged pores such as blackheads and whiteheads, pimples and even small cysts can all contribute to disfigure the complexion. While acne usually occurs during puberty, it is not restricted to any particular age range. There are various techniques that are used to treat this condition. One of them is called acne laser treatment.

    1. Basics

      • Acne laser treatment uses a small but powerful laser to treat the acne. There are various types of laser treatments that can be used. Some of the most common are pulsed-dye, argon and neodymium. Laser carbon dioxide and YAG laser are also utilized. The particular type of laser to be used should be determined by a professional dermatologist and is chosen depending on the patient's skin type.

      Process

      • Acne is usually caused by an overproduction of oil in the skin. This can be caused by various factors such as genes or pollution. The laser destroys the oil-producing glands to prevent them from functioning properly. Without the oil, bacteria will have a difficult time growing in the skin. This alleviates acne and causes it to discontinue. It should be noted that acne laser treatment is not necessarily used to cure existing acne. Acne laser treatment limits further outbreaks.

      Other Benefits

      • One of the effects of skin acne is the occurrence of scars once the acne clears. These can range from discoloration from too much melanin concentrated in a particular area to cavities carved out on the skin. Acne laser treatment can also be used for scar removal. A powerful laser can be used to remove the top layers of skin surrounding the scar. This process, called laser resurfacing, uses the laser to tighten and remove the damage from skin. Once the skin regenerates, it will be in better condition than before.

      Disadvantages

      • The downside of using acne laser treatment is that it is more expensive than other procedures. Unlike treatments such as topical solutions which are usually readily available, acne laser treatment requires a visit to a professional dermatologist. It also often takes four treatments over a period of two weeks to see satisfactory results. Each treatment means a separate cost for the patient so it can be quite expensive to undergo the treatment. Depending on the sensitivity of the skin, there may be some discomfort. However, the doctor can use a local anesthesia to lessen it. Another disadvantage to acne laser treatment is that there is some down time involved. The skin may be red and irritated after the treatment and can take from several hours to several days to heal.

      Prevention

      • The skin is particularly sensitive while it is undergoing acne laser treatment. To prevent further breakouts, the infected area must be kept clean using a cleanser specially formulated for the skin. Products that contain oil such as sunscreens and makeup should also be avoided. Those who are undergoing acne laser treatment should avoid going under the sun as the skin will be extra sensitive to sunlight.
