High definition television or HDTV is a digital TV broadcast in a higher resolution than SDTV (standard definition television). DVR (digital video recorder) is a device designed to record digital video. A high definition (HD) DVR combines these two elements into one device. Numerous companies manufacture HD DVRs. Both DirecTV and Dish Network satellite providers have high-definition DVRs, as do cable companies and TiVo. High definition DVRs can be purchased separately or leased from television programming providers.

From Quick Guide: About HD Television

    Function

  1. A high definition DVR is used to view and record high-definition television programming. It can be combined with a satellite receiver to pick up satellite broadcasts in HD or as a separate unit. The DVR features consist of being able to stop, pause, rewind, fast forward and record high definition television. Two HD programs can be recorded at the same time. A high definition television is required to view programming in HD. Satellite and cable companies may require a subscription to receive HD and DVR services.
  2. Types

  3. High definition digital video recorders are available in different types. The main differences are the amount of space available to store recorded programming on. The HD DVRs can be used to record both standard or high definition television broadcasts. These units will hold a significantly higher amount of SDTV than HDTV.
  4. Identification

  5. DirecTV has a DIRECTV Plus HD DVR that can record 200 hours of SDTV broadcasts and 50 hours of HD. Dish Network has the Solo DVR ViP 612 for one television or the DuoDVR ViP 622 that can be used for two TVs. The 612 and 622 can record 200 hours of standard television and 30 hours of HD programming.

TiVo has two HDTV DVRs. TiVo HD can store 300 hours of SDTV and 20 hours of HD, the TiVo HD XL can store 1,350 hours of standard and 150 hours of high definition programming. Other companies produce numerous additional models of HD DVRs.
  6. Features

  7. High definition digital video recorders can be used with existing cable television, but may require a "CableCARD decoder" to get programming. These DVRs can also be used with antennas and the storage capacity can be increase with a "My DVR Expander." Satellite HD DVRs offer the best viewing of SD and HD broadcasts, can be set to record entire TV series, include Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, have parental controls and can be expanded.
  8. Considerations

  9. Anyone thinking about getting a high definition DVR should consider the monthly cost of the HD programming and DVR services, the programs offered and the commitment. You can often obtain a free HD DVR from most companies supplying high definition broadcasts with a new account. These HD DVRs are leased and can be used as long as your account remains in good standing. Existing customers can upgrade their service, but there may be an additional fee for this. If you do not want to be locked into a contract or lease a HD DVR, you should consider buying one outright. are others things to consider.
