Modern Women's Hairstyles

With so many careers, hobbies and choices in a modern woman's life, it's only fitting that she has an equal array of hairstyles from which to choose. The main ingredient for picking a modern woman's hairstyle is to go with something that both fits the lifestyle and amount of time someone wants to invest in achieving that style. No set length, hair type or color is preferred, but several styles are staying at the forefront of the coifs that grace the modern women's head. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Bed Head

    • Messy yet sexy, the bed head craze blasted on the scene for all lengths of hair much to everyone's delight. The style does not take long to achieve and matches an array of fashion statements. This look should mimic someone who just gotten out of bed in a carefree, sexy manner but not in a way that is unkempt or has hair sticking out freakishly in all directions. Bed head can best be achieved by a non-stiff thickening agent or paste sparingly massaged through damp or dry hair.

    Retro

    • Retro looks are always in style, especially when they are coupled with retro fashions. The 1960s sex kitten look, complete with a hair bump secured with pins at the top of the head, is a great evening style. The 1940s pin curls are a fun look to suit with a vintage business suit. Beehives from the 1950s can even work, as long as they are not dyed bluish purple and don't reach more than one foot in length. Lots of styling balm and bobby pins make these styles work.

    Pony Tails

    • The modern women's pony tail is a far cry from the high school cheerleader's. Pony tails can be professional and sleek by making a strong part down the side of the scalp and fastening a low pony just above the collar. It can also take on a more flirty look worn high on the head and wrapped with a tendril of the women's own hair rather to hide the elastic band. Pony tails are best kept in place by sleeking them back with a pomade on wet hair and spritzing with hair spray.

    Bob

    • Ever since bobs swept the scene in the 1920s, they've never gone out of style. Modern women can update the short, flapper gal look by sporting a bob that is cut asymmetrically or features streaks of highlights. Bobs are also worn at varying lengths, no longer delegated only to the very short hair. Bobs can be worn at shoulder length or longer, with or without bangs and work on straight, curly or wavy hair.

    Choppy

    • Like the bob, choppy hairstyles work on a variety of lengths and hair types. The trick to pulling off a choppy look is similar to the bed head philosophy: the hair has to look as if someone just rolled out of bed and naturally falls that way. Razor cuts, which use a razor blade to chop off layers, is a great way to achieve the choppy look. Finish off the style with a paste or thickening agent on damp or dry hair, pulled from the roots to the ends of the strands.
