Going Green With Renewable Energy
It seems like everywhere people are "going green." Green, renewable energy promises a clean environment, solutions to global climate change, and a new arena for jobs. Diverse uses of renewable energy resources are being used. Research continues into other green energy possibilities.
-
Significance
-
Oil, all coal and natural gas are non-renewable energy resources. When these resources are gone, they will be gone forever. The worst of the news surrounding non-renewable resources is their cumulative impact on the environment, a leading factor in global climate change. With the planet confronting an possible environmental disaster, it is imperative to research and develop existing and new renewable energy resources. Such solutions exist and are realistic.
.
Types
-
Biomass, geothermal, wind and solar power are the future of renewable energy sources. Biomass, or bioenergy, is energy developed from plants and plant materials. Wood is the main bioenergy source. Other plants and plant derivatives are used. Organic matter from city and industrial wastes and methane gas produced by landfills are fuel sources. Geothermal energy uses the earth's natural energy and heat. Solar energy produces various residential and industrial power options. Wind farms are becoming landmarks across the country and around the world.
-
Uses
-
Biofuels convert bioenergy into liquid fuel for vehicles. Electricity can be derived from direct or indirect biopower sources. Plant-derived energy makes bioproducts that replace petroleum-based materials, such as plastics. Utility providers can use geothermal energy to run generators for electricity production. The earth's natural heat can provide heating and cooling residential and industrial buildings. Solar power heats homes heated homes and cools server farms. Utility companies use wind power to deliver power to customers and offer energy credit programs to reduce carbon footprints and fund renewable energy providers.
Benefits
-
Bioenergy is the sole source for liquid transportation fuels, bringing a promise of reducing reliance on non-renewable energy resources. Biofuels do not release significant greenhouse gases. As long as the earth emits heat, geothermal energy is a promising source of energy. The photovoltaic possibilities of solar energy makes it possible to produce electricity directly from the sun. The sun's heat is another source of electricity.
Considerations
-
It will take time to further develop green energy technologies. Unfortunately, time may be a resource in short supply. Renewable energy ("green collar") jobs are being created. Delivery options and affordability problems must be resolved. The Federal government has grants for individuals, businesses and other organizations that want to pursue green energy solutions.
