Dakine's Freestyle Bag

Since the inception of modern snowboarding in the early 1970s, the sport has swept the world full force. As snowboarders began traveling among different resorts, mountain ranges and countries, the need for proper snowboard transport became prevalent, plowing the way for the use of different types of snowboard travel bags in the 21st century.

    Hard Cases

  1. Made of high-density polyethylene, these snowboard cases are more durable than soft cases but lack compressibility when trying to fit the bag into smaller spaces such as a packed car. Most hard cases fit one or two snowboards with boots and bindings and are equipped with wheels for airport transport. These are much heavier than soft cases but may be locked for shipping purposes.
  2. Soft-padded Cases

  3. Lightly padded soft case

Fully padded snowboard bags are more expensive but give your snowboard and other gear stowed inside the best chance of arriving at your destination just as you packed them. Fully padded cases are, of course, slightly heavier than un-padded ones but may also come with more pockets and features such as exterior access boot pockets.
  4. Soft Un-padded Cases

  5. Cheaper travel bags can be purchased that are completely unlined or only lined on the bottom. These may be suitable if you are transporting your snowboard yourself in a car, for example, but if you will be flying and the bag is thrown in with hundreds of other pieces of luggage you may want to have a travel bag that has more padding. This can also be remedied by packing clothing around the board inside the unlined travel bag.
  6. Features

  7. Most snowboard travel bags feature a full-length zipper and a large shoulder strap as well as carrying handles. The most simplistic designs may not have any side or inner pockets and are the least expensive. Most feature at least one or two side pockets and some may have an inner divider which enables the storage of more than one snowboard. Some bags have wheels at one end so that they can be carted through airports without having to shoulder the weight. Many travel bags are plain black but there are in increasing number of bags produced with pipe style prints such as the Dakine Pipeboard Boardpack Snowboard Bag.
  8. Benefits

  9. Traveling with a snowboard bag is convenient in that most bags can fit snowboard boots and other gear, too, and the bindings do not need to be removed. In fact, many bags have ample room so that you could squeeze two boards if you needed to. Snowboard travel bags can be checked as luggage on a plane, allowing riders to go and ride anywhere in the world.
