Function
-
Dog trainers teach dogs how to behave. They may work with pets on an individual basis in the owner's home, or have dog training classes where owners bring their dogs for instruction. They teach dogs simple commands as well as breaking bad habits like jumping on people. Dog trainers may also work training dogs for stunts in movies.
Education
-
Often a high school diploma is enough to start a career as a dog trainer. A person may work as an assistant to a professional until they are ready to work on their own. Community colleges may teach offer classes for dog trainers that will help them in their work. Trainers can get certified through one of many programs available across the country.

Types
-
There are several types of dog-training careers available. The first is dog training in general. These people have their own dog training class, or work individually with people who contact them about problem pets. The second type train animals for movies or other special events. They teach animals special tricks, and in some cases only work with a specific group of trained dogs. A third option for a dog training career includes training for other purposes, such as seeing eye dogs or for dog shows. Both careers can be undertaken by anyone, and usually don't require any special degree.
Significance
-
Without dog trainers, we wouldn't have as much luck disciplining out-of-control pets, or getting animals to do tricks for movies, commercials, and entertainment. A dog trainer can be a real life saver for a family who does not want to get rid of their dog, but can't control their behavior problems. Since many openings are available throughout the year for trainers, employment is fairly stable, and families will always need personalized trainers to help in their homes.
Warning
-
Some work can be dangerous or unpleasant. Working with animals means taking care of them and cleaning up after them. A dog trainer might have to take care of a sick dog, clean up messes they make, and discipline them when they misbehave. A dog may bite or scratch a trainer, causing injury and the risk of infection.
