About Denture Implants
Denture implants are, quite simply put, dentures in the mouth that are supported by implants. They are overdentures that are both supported and attached to implants. Traditional dentures rest on the gums and are not help up by implants, and therefore sit less tightly and firmly within the mouth. People who get dentures or denture implants are individuals who have lost some or all of their teeth due to tooth decay and other problems.

Denture implants are used when an individual doesn't have teeth in his jaw, but has sufficient bone in the jaw to support and hold up implants. Dentures that are supported by denture implants have attachments that connect onto attachments that are part of the implants themselves. Denture implants are usually constructed for the lower jaw as dentures tend to be less stable there.
Types

Two different types of denture implants are popularly and commonly used: ball-retained and bar-retained. Both of these dentures consist of acrylic foundations that resemble the gums. False teeth made out of acrylic or porcelain are connected to the base.

Ball-Retained Dentures

These are stud-attachment denture implants that require at least two implants. Both implants in the jawbone connect onto another attachment directly on the dentures. The implants have ball-shaped attachments and connect into sockets on the actual denture (although sometimes the attachments are reversed).
Bar-Retained Dentures

With bar-retained dentures, a slender metal bar is connected alongside the curve of your jaw and then attached onto between two and five implants that have been inserted in the jawbone. Then, attachments are placed onto the bar, denture or, in some cases, onto both. The denture then fits snugly over the bar and is clipped tightly into place.
Time Frame

The time frame for the process of receiving denture implants can vary. The shortest possible time period is about five months for the lower jaw and seven months for the upper jaw. The process involves both denture placement as well as several surgeries. In some cases, the process can take over a year as some people need to undergo grafting and other procedures for preparation for the implants.
