About Mild Colitis Symptoms

Colitis is an inflammation of the colon (part of the large intestine). Certain causes can lead to colitis, such as insufficient blood supply, infections and autoimmune reactions. The main function of the colon is for acquiring and keeping digestion waste products. If you have colitis, you are going to experience several side effects and symptoms. There are also less serious symptoms associated with individuals who have mild colitis.

  1. Mild Symptoms

    • The most common mild colitis symptoms include abdominal pain and loose stools. Other symptoms include blood in the stools, tenesmus (constant urge to pass stools), abdominal pain coming and going in waves, and other signs of infection and inflammation such as chills and fever.

    Medical Treatment

    • If you experience a symptom like loose stools, in general, it should subside within a few hours. However, an individual should seek medical attention immediately if they experience side effects such as persistent loose stools, fever, dehydration, strong abdominal pain and blood in the stools.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Most people who have colitis have mild to moderate forms of the condition. "Normal" colitis symptoms are urgent needs to go to the restroom, bloody stools and cramping, and abdominal pain. However, if your mild symptoms change or get worse, it is vital that you contact your doctor immediately, as you could have a more serious condition such as colon cancer.

    Other Possible Symptoms

    • There are other possible symptoms for mild colitis that perhaps aren't as common as the others, but still not generally cause for alarm. These symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, fever, vomiting, nausea, mucus in the stool and various others.

    Warning

    • If you have any of these symptoms and think that they are "mild," it is important to know that these are generally considered to be more serious colitis symptoms and you should seek further medical attention. These more serious symptoms are loose stools six or more times daily, severe, painful cramps and blood or mucus in the stools on a frequent basis.
