Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, comes from the loss of natural mucous that protects the stomach from stomach acids. This can cause an uncomfortable sense of fullness and a burning sensation in the esophagus. Fortunately, there are many remedies and lifestyle changes that can help cure indigestion.

  1. Digestive Foods

    • Some foods and beverages help indigestion. Peppermint tea and a concoction of natural apple cider vinegar, honey and distilled water help with indigestion and heartburn. Acidophiles yogurt, almonds, lemons, dried figs, pineapple and papaya are all good for the stomach.

    Herbal Remedies

    • Angelica, caraway oil and gentian relieve flatulence. Cinnamon helps with bloating and cramping. Dandelion, fennel, horehound and peppermint relieve gas. Tumeric helps with stomach irritation. While these herbs are generally better for you than medicine, they contain nutrients that can be harmful in excess.

    Lifestyle Change

    • Those suffering from frequent indigestion should reduce alcohol consumption and avoid smoking, stress aspirin and medicines used to treat arthritis. You should also eat regular meals. All of these things cause damage to the mucous lining on the stomach, causing the stomach acids to irritate the stomach.

    Medicine

    • H-2 antagonists prevent gastrointestinal conditions and can be taken before meals to prevent heartburn. Prokinetics increase the contractions of the small intestines causing matter to travel more quickly through the digestive system. Antiflatulents prevent the buildup of gas in the digestive system. Antacids counteract excessive acids in the stomach.

    Side Effects

    • H-2 antagonists can cause a drop in blood pressure. Prokinetics can cause nausea, diarrhea, nervousness and irritability. Antacids contain calcium and excessive calcium can be fatal. Antacids can encourage the growth of kidney stones, heart and neurological problems.
