A youth group is an organized group of young people that are sponsored by a single adult or a group of adults. All youth groups have a central focus for the members. The youth group that a child joins should be one focused on his specific interests. A chess whiz would enjoy a youth group that focuses on strategy games, while an avid Bible reader would enjoy a faith-based youth group.

    Function

  1. A youth group usually has a specific goal it hopes to attain. This goal may be something as simple as spending time with senior citizens or as complex as organizing and funding a trip to help build a school in a third-world country. The youth group sponsors will usually plan fundraisers and activities to help the kids learn how to meet their goals. This is beneficial to the kids, as well as to the community.
  2. Types

  3. Youth groups are usually associated with churches. However, there are many different types of youth groups. Community-based and school-based are two other kinds of youth groups. While each of these serves the same purpose, there are some slight differences. Church-based youth groups are usually members of the same church or denomination. Community-based programs focus on keeping kids off the street while teaching life skills. School-based programs are usually focused on one specific area of study, such as home economics or math.
  4. Meeting

  5. When a youth group gathers, the meeting usually entails an actual meeting and some type of activity. For the most part, during the meeting portion, someone will give the group a status update on ongoing projects, introduce new projects and brainstorm about potential fundraisers, activities and projects. After the meeting, the group may participate in an organized activity or game, such as a limbo contest.
  6. Effects

  7. A strong work ethic, a sense of community and teamwork are some of the skills kids learn through youth groups. These groups teach kids that having a balance between work and play is necessary to achieve goals. The sponsors of the youth group are meant to be a constant, dependable foundation upon which the children can rely. This teaches the kids to be self sufficient while encouraging them to ask for help when needed. These skills can carry over to other areas of a child's life.
  8. Special Occasions

  9. Many youth groups mark holidays or special occasions with big events. For example, a youth group may hold a kids only Super Bowl party or an end of the school year lock-in at a local YMCA or skating rink. This gives the kids in the group a chance to socialize while supervised. It also enables parents to go out knowing that their children are safe, sound and having fun.
