Chronic back pain can sometimes be linked to the type of mattress a person uses. In addition, using the wrong type of mattress can also result in other physical ailments, such as neck pain, leg pain or shoulder pain. It is important to choose the right mattress for your sleeping style. Sometimes, a doctor or a chiropractor can recommend the best type of mattress for you, depending on what ails you.

From Quick Guide: Introduction to Beds

    Effects

  1. The mattress that a doctor will recommend pretty much depends on the doctor. If you go to two different doctors with the same ailment, chances are, they will both have a different recommendation as to what type of mattress you should purchase. Most chiropractors or orthopedists will recommend firm mattresses. However, firm mattresses are not for everyone. A lot of people would much rather sleep on a softer mattress because they feel as if firms ones are too hard.
  2. Reasoning

  3. According to various surveys, orthopedists often recommend that their patients sleep on medium-firm mattresses, instead of firm mattresses. The reason they cite for this choice are pretty simple: If you are sleeping on a mattress that is too hard, or firm, chances are that it will cause pressure points that will be uncomfortable, particularly in the shoulder, knee and hip. The pressure put on these points can cause the joints in these areas to deteriorate, resulting in arthritis. If you already have arthritis, it can be aggravated by sleeping on a mattress that is too firm.
  4. Considerations

  5. Another aspect to consider when choosing a mattress is to make sure that it has a good support system. You need to make sure that the mattress you are purchasing has a decent core because this is what will provide the support for your back. If your mattress does not provide the proper support, you can put your back out of alignment simply by sleeping on it. This can also result in bulging or herniated discs.
  6. Types

  7. There are many different types of mattresses on the market today. A lot of them are specialized mattresses, which your doctor may also recommend, such as TempurPedic or Memory Foam mattresses. Other times, dermatologists can recommend mattresses that are made out of organic materials. These types of mattresses will can cut down on the allergens that gather in conventional mattresses.
  8. Prevention/Solution

  9. Once you find the mattress that is right for you, proper care is essential in maintaining the mattress and prolonging the life of the mattress, as well. Make sure that you use a mattress pad or waterproof covering on it. This will help reduce the amount of skin cells and sweat that will weigh your mattress down. Also, if applicable, flip your mattress every few months. This will keep the mattress from sagging and wearing out. Above all else, if your doctor recommends a certain type of mattress, take his recommendations into consideration.
