According to a written account, the first sign of anyone using medicine and entomology was in 1248. It was in a book called "Collected Cases of Injustice Rectified," written by Song Ci in Song Dynasty China. This account involved a case that was a murder by a sickle. Because flies are attracted by blood, everyone who owned a sickle was instructed to bring it to a designated location. The one who had flies covering the sickle was the killer, who ended up confessing. The book was also instrumental in describing what drowning would do to the lungs and what strangulation would do to the neck. Throughout the centuries, other physicians would invent ways of determining death through autopsies, which led the way for pathology. In the 1700s, books from medical experts began to appear such as "A Treatise on Forensic Medicine and Public Health" and "The Complete System of Police Medicine." In 1784, an actual case was solved and tried in a court of law with forensic science.

The main purpose for computer forensic software is to retrieve deleted or hidden files to solve criminal cases or for company-related needs. Because many businesses and companies like to keep track of what is going on in the office, they can install forensic programs that keep detailed information on emails even if they are deleted. For the law enforcement officials, it's used to help in solving crimes. For instance, the "BTK killer" would send correspondence to the police on a floppy disk. The forensics team would analyze the disk and officials were soon able to gather information referred to as "metadata." Metadata is information gathered from other information on a computer and because of this, they were able to figure out his name and even where he attended church.

One expert feels that the acquisition capabilities are good to use but the analysis part is not as easy as the Windows program he uses. However, another expert states the software program lets him view a suspect's computer with the Linux software as if he was the owner of the computer.
