About Patio Doors
Patio doors are the best of both worlds. Like windows, they allow the sun to shine through and lighten a room, and yet serve as an exit to the outdoors. Whether they are part of the living room, bedroom or dining room, patio doors add sophistication, function and warmth. Today's patio doors are energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing compared to the old sliding doors of the past. With so many to choose from, the choice may be difficult. Does this Spark an idea?

Types
-
There are two basic designs for patio doors: sliding doors and French hinged doors. Sliding doors are two or more panels where at least one panel slides past the other. One panel is stationary and may be located on the left or right side. French hinged doors are one, two or three panels. One or two panels swing to the inside or outside.
Materials
-
Sliding doors and French doors are made of aluminum, vinyl, wood or wood clad. The aluminum doors are the least expensive, but they don't rust. The vinyl doors are low maintenance with minimal cleaning. Wood framed doors are more expensive and natural looking. Wood clad doors are coated with vinyl, fiberglass or aluminum to protect the wood frame. Steel and fiberglass are other optional materials.

Features
-
Patio door options include choice of glass such as beveled, stained or grills that snap over the glass. Sidelights are available on one side or both sides for added effect. Transoms are glass partitions over the door. They may be curved, rectangular or arched.
Benefits
-
Patio doors can range from 5 to 12 feet in width. Glass is now more energy-efficient than original dual-pane glass. According to the Anderson window website, their patio doors cut energy costs up to 25 percent. The glass blocks UV rays and lowers sound from the outside. Screens are available for both slide and French hinge patio doors to let in air during summer months and keep out insects. Security locks provide extra protection. Foot locks can even lock with the panel slightly open. Locks fit snugly for weather protection and security.
Considerations
-
When purchasing a patio door, prices vary from $300 for a basic sliding 5 ft. door to more than $3000 for 12 ft. doors. Doors that are more expensive may have extra features, such as sidelights and transoms. Installation runs approximately $150. Check out Lowe's for a wide selection.
