Tools Used for Woodworking

For a woodworker starting out, you should stay with basic tools and gradually add more tools to the collection as you advance your skills. Woodworking is skill that you can learn on your own by using patterns and some simple woodworking tools. The tools don't have to be expensive to start your woodworking tool kit.

Tools for Measuring

  • A woodworker will need basic measuring tools. You should have a compass, folding ruler, tape measure, sliding level, framing square and a combination square. For the tape measure, you want to have one that will work for longer lengths up to 20 or 50 feet, depending on the type of projects that you will be doing.

Tools for Cutting

  • You will be doing a lot of cutting, so you will need cutting tools to make the work easier. You should have a diagonal cutter, needle nose pliers, hacksaw, coping saw, backsaw, rip saw and a crosscut saw. You should have enough blades for the hacksaw and rip saw because they can break if you aren't sure how to properly use them.

Tools for Shaping

  • You will need tools for shaping and manipulating the wood. A smooth planer, angle block planer, wood chisels, round wasp and a flat rasp should be in the woodworker's tool kit. A utility knife and a hand scraper should be on hand depending on the project you are doing.

Hand Tools

  • Every woodworking kit needs to have a claw hammer, finishing hammer, nail set, wooden mallet and flat tip and Phillips screwdrivers. You should also have a doweling jig, clamps, and bench vise, hand screws and wrenches.

Power Tools

  • Although some woodworkers use hand tools only, you may want to have some basic power tools, which will allow you to do more projects. You should have a jigsaw, hand sander, belt sander, drill and bits, circular saw and a router. If you plan to do large woodworking projects, a small table saw will work nicely.

Safety Gear

  • All woodworking kits should include safety gear such as face shields and safety goggles. If you will be using power tools or making noise for long periods, hearing gear should be included. A respirator or a dusk mask should be included in the kit and a sharpening stone to keep your tools in good condition.
