Top Colleges for Epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study of the wellness of a specific population. Epidemiology includes both the health as well as the sickness of a cross-section of individuals, which is either a society or a specific group of people. Epidemiologist studies include data collection and statistics, the management of disease outbreaks and the study of biological information to determine the traits and patterns of a given group of people. Epidemiology is a program that can be studied in many colleges throughout the United States, but there are only a few top epidemiology college programs.

Identification
-
The epidemiology program at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health was created in 1919 and is the oldest epidemiology program in the world. It is also considered to be the top masters and doctorate epidemiology program in the United States. Epidemiology programs are typically graduate or doctorate programs in university settings. A few of the top colleges and universities for epidemiology include Harvard University, Princeton University, Berkeley College, the University of Washington and the University of North Carolina. There are several other notable epidemiology programs in the United States, including Columbia University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Los Angeles and Tulane University.
Types
-
Before choosing an epidemiology program, you will want to determine which field of study you would like to focus on. Courses of study at JHU include gene-environment interaction, epidemiologic methodology, prevention of infectious diseases, sleep disorders, evaluation of access to health care, HIV and AIDS infection, cardiovascular epidemiology, molecular epidemiology of cancer, epidemiology and policy outcomes and environmentally induced illness. The masters and doctoral degrees offer nine distinct areas of concentration.

Features
-
Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health specializes in classes about disease control. Tulane, on the other hand, has an excellent program on tropical medicine as well as international and domestic public health. If you are more interested in population research, on the other hand, you may want to consider the program at Princeton University. For an overall spectrum of many different concentrations as well as small class sizes, the epidemiology program at the University of Minnesota may be the degree for you.
Benefits
-
Epidemiology degrees can be obtained in either large or small university settings. The epidemiology program at Tulane, for example, is much smaller than the program at Johns Hopkins University. The Department of Epidemiology at Tulane provides only 32 classes in its entire program. At the University of Minnesota, teachers and students have created a program designed solely for alcohol epidemiology, and the effects of alcohol on society.
Suggestions
-
If you are interested in a career in epidemiology, a graduate or doctorate degree is crucial. If you would like to study epidemiology in an undergraduate setting, however, many top schools offer Health and Wellness majors, including Boston University, George Washington University, Emory University, Stanford University and Michigan State University. If you are interested in applying for a graduate or doctorate degree, you must have the corresponding amount of undergraduate credits before getting admitted and beginning your program.
