About "Abs of Steel"

Abs of Steel was developed to target the core muscles of the stomach using a wide range of isometric exercises that tone and strengthen the abdomen. The Abs of Steel workouts are suitable for both men and women, and efficiently use the individual's own body weight in place of an exercise machine.

  1. Identification

    • Part of the "of Steel" VHS video system, "Abs of Steel" was released in the early 1990s and contained an effective abdominal workout featuring fitness trainer, Tamilee Webb. Workouts are broken down into segments that are intended to be followed in sequence, but on separate days.

    Types

    • The Abs of Steel workout series consists of four separately titled videos. "Abs of Steel I" contains three 10-minute abdominal programs; and "Abs of Steel II" consists of two 15-minute workouts that incorporate push ups into the routine. For those that have progressed past the second series, "Abs of Steel III" and "Abs of Steel 2000" have also been developed. "Abs of Steel III" features a more advanced abdominal routine, while "Abs of Steel 2000" consists of seven, 20-minute workouts that are quite intense.

For those that are interested in adding some exercises that involve the toning of the arm muscles, the Abs of Steel series also offers "Arms and Abs of Steel" and "Arms and Abs of Steel Advanced." Both videos mirror the earlier "Abs of Steel" videos, except that a variation of cardiovascular and arm exercises has been added.

    Features

    • All of the Abs of Steel exercise routines focus on the theory of isometrics. Isometrics can target a specific muscle group and use the body's own resistance to tone and build muscle without the need for weights or heavy gym equipment. In the case of Abs of Steel, Tamilee Web focuses on the rectus abdominis muscle group which is responsible for a strong and healthy core.

    Considerations

    • Even though the original Abs of Steel workouts were released in VHS format only, those who have abandoned their video cassette recorders and made the switch over to DVD's need not despair. The complete Abs of Steel series has been digitally mastered into DVD format, and is accompanied by the "Buns of Steel" and "Arms of Steel" fitness routines.

    Warning

    • While isometrics are considered to be less stressful on the body than other forms of exercise, Abs of Steel is not for everyone. Pregnant women and those with previous injuries that are under a physician's care, should not follow the Abs of Steel workout routine. As with any fitness routine, a doctor should be consulted beforehand, and all forms of exercise should cease at the first signs of dizziness, nausea, feeling lightheaded, pain or discomfort.
