What to Use a Gas Powered Rivet Gun On

The most common use for a rivet gun is to drive rivets. Just about all of the rivet guns on the market today are powered by either gas or air. The most common type of rivet driving is performed in aircraft assembly and in constructing structural steel.

  1. Identification

    • All rivets have what is known as a manufactured head. The gas-powered rivet gun is used on the manufactured head to drive the rivet into its intended place. The rivet guns that are used in the construction of structural steel are typically rather large. However, those used to drive rivets in assembling aircraft are usually smaller and can be held with one hand. Rivet guns can also be used in constructing things such as bridges or boats. You can basically use a rivet gun on anything that require using rivets. This usually consists of heavy-duty building materials such as steel or heavy wood.

    Features

    • Not all rivet guns are the same. They come in all different sizes and shapes. They also have a wide variety of grips and handles. Gas-powered rivet guns are usually adjusted by a regulator that controls the amount of gas that enters the gun. The regulated gas then passes through a throttle valve. The trigger located on the hand grip of the gun usually controls the throttle.

    Function

    • When you squeeze the trigger on the rivet gun, the throttle valve is opened. Once the valve opens, the gas is released and is free to flow into the gun's piston. When the piston of the gun opens, a port opens, through which the gas is released. The piston then hits the set of the rivet, and the force pushes the rivet into the work.

    Misconceptions

    • Some people think that a gas-powered rivet gun and an air hammer are the same. This notion is not true. The rivet gun actually delivers a more precise driving force than the air hammer does. However, air hammers can be used to cut and shape metal, whereas rivet guns typically are not used for those sorts of projects.

    Benefits

    • Using a gas-powered rivet gun is more beneficial than using a ball-peen hammer to drive rivets. For one, you get more driving force by using the rivet gun. In addition, you get a more accurate drive than that of a hammer. For example, when hammering a nail, you can easily hit the material behind the nail that you are driving. The hammer can slip off and hit something else. With a rivet gun, you usually hit the rivet dead-on and can avoid damaging the material through which you are driving the rivet.
