About Cross-Stitching

Cross-stitching is one of the oldest forms of needlecraft. It uses patterns, needles and threads to create designs and pictures with the "X" sewing shape as a basis. Some people use cross-stitching to pass the time while watching television or commuting. Some enjoy listening to music in its sole pursuit. It's a classic hobby of mothers and grandmothers who create keepsakes for little loved ones. Cross-stitching is simply a great hobby, regardless of how it's pursued.

Cross-Stitching Defined

Cross-stitching is defined as a double stitch that perfectly creates an "X" in sewing projects, as well as embroidery ones. It also refers to the needlework created by stitches in the shape of an "X." These stitches are used to form a picture or design.

Types of Cross-Stitching

For cross-stitching, according to the Yarn Tree, "There are two methods. The first method is to work a row of half stitches (////); then work back (\\\\) to complete the Xs. Use this method for most stitching."

The other method for cross-stitching involves simply creating each "X" design as you go.

Craft stores, such as Michael's, sell predesigned cross-stitching patterns that one can easily follow to create available pictures. Some choose to create their own cross-stitching patterns. It's fairly easy. Use the "X" basis to draw your design on paper, leaving realistic room for sewing on fabrics.

Considerations

Each color thread may be used in a cross-stitch pattern in several areas. When cross-stitching, the thread can sometimes be carried without the need to start and stop. However, in cases where the thread is dark and the fabric is light, the carried thread may show through. In that case, the thread will need to be tied off and started again in the new location.

Cross-Stich in Decor

The best way to display a great cross-stitch is to frame it. This is especially recommended if you are doing a cross-stitch for someone as a gift. A personalized, framed cross-stitch design makes a great gift for a child who has accomplished something that deserves a award, or to commemorate an anniversary date.

Some people choose to cross-stitch designs into curtains or tapestry. While these will be harder to maintain, they create one-of-a-kind creations.

Cross-stitching, when done in a more casual way, can even be tacked to a wall or placed as a part of a mural in a child's room.

Cross-Stitch Maintenance

Wash all materials that have cross-stitching in cool to cold water. Mild detergents should be used if necessary. Sometimes, rinsing with only water is recommended. However, one should always rinse the garments thoroughly and gently.

Wringing cross-stitching should be always avoided, as you risk deforming (albeit only temporarily, requiring another washing) the cross-stitched fabric. Instead, place it face down between two like cloths that are plain. Iron it lightly after stacking a couple of cloths upon the cross-stitch for protection. Or make sure the fabric is held straight down and wait for it to dry into place naturally.
