About Privacy Hedges
People don't have to erect massive fences to get a lot of privacy. They can turn to privacy hedges instead. Privacy hedges can be created out of an attractive variety of plants and can serve several purposes beyond blocking out the neighbors. Privacy hedges are versatile enough to be easily incorporated into a number of landscaping plans to give folks the seclusion they crave around a pool, patio or entire backyard. Does this Spark an idea?

Function
-
As the name suggests, the main purpose of the privacy hedge is to create a barrier for privacy. But that is not their only function. Privacy hedges can also offer protection from the wind, surrounding noises and stray animals or children that may wonder aimlessly into yards. They can also serve as a property marker and even a theft deterrent as any potential burglar has to figure out a way to jump over or otherwise get around them.
Types
-
Various types of evergreens are a very popular type of privacy hedge, but they are not the only plant that works well. Other popular options include azaleas, privets, boxwood and mountain laurels. Cyprus and different types of juniper trees also work well. The type of privacy hedge that works best will be determined by the climate and what size and shape of space needs to be filled.

Features
-
The most useful privacy hedges will be dense and tall enough to stop people from snooping. They should also be planted close enough together so no gaps appear between the bushes. Evergreens are a good bet because they will not lose their leaves in winter and allow peepers a whole season of peeping. Those looking to protect their lawns rather than put up a full-fledged barrier will do well with shorter hedges. Privacy hedges are sometimes trimmed into interesting or geometric shapes to add a dash of creativity to the landscaping.
Effects
-
Folks who have a very narrow area where privacy hedges are needed may want to consider long vines. These can grow in tight spaces, stick to walls and fencing and don't require a lot of breathing room. Tall trellises can also be erected on which the vines can thrive to high heights or trained to cover particular areas. Flower vines make for a warm, sunny burst of landscaping color. Other privacy hedges, to create any effect desired, can be constructed out of painted metal, plastic or faux plants. This takes away the danger of the landscape drying out or dying.
Considerations
-
Privacy hedges can be used along with other materials to achieve the same function. Privacy hedges coupled with privacy screens create an interesting and effective barrier around an area. Trellises filled with vines can be added to the mix, either propped against the screens or freestanding on their own. Some of these methods can be used when privacy hedges are first installed and not large enough to do the job on their own.
