Reactions to K9 Advantix

The animal healthcare division of Bayer pharmaceutical company produces K9 Advantix as a flea, mosquito and tick prevention method. It is aimed at puppies and dogs over the age of seven weeks. The topical ointment is applied directly to the animal's skin and is touted as both a prevention and bug killer. Because of the strong chemical ingredients used in the product, many dog owners report adverse reactions to the product in their pets.

  1. Function

    • K9 Advantix is made from two powerful chemical ingredients: imidacloprid and permethrin. It is designed to work for up to 30 days. The chemicals stop fleas from biting within three to four minutes of application and kill the fleas completely in less than 12 hours. It is only available by prescription from a veterinarian. The vet needs to know about other medications the pet may be taking as the Advantix can react with other drugs. Some dogs exhibit a rash or other skin disorder, which usually abates within a day of application.

    Features

    • Since K9 Advantix is an ointment, it often stays wet for up to 24 hours. Dogs that ingest the chemicals can experience some profuse drooling for a day or so as the dog rids itself of the bitter taste. Overdose is extremely rare. The dosage of the medicine is based on the dog's weight. While most veterinarians use Advantix to control and kill the deadly fleas and ticks on dogs, there are numerous anecdotal complaints from pet owners about allergic reactions in their pets, which range from severe rashes to seizures. If a dog exhibits an allergic reaction to the medication, take the animal to the vet as soon as possible.

    Benefits

    • The parasites that set up home in the coats of dogs can be more than annoying. They carry diseases such as Lyme disease, tapeworm and bacterial infections that can be hazardous to both the pets and humans in a household. Once infested, the parasites are difficult to banish and often require the strength of chemicals such as those found in K9 Advantix and other pet medications.

    Warning

    • K9 Advantix is a poison and could be lethal to children or other pets, especially cats that do not have the same level of protection in their skin that keeps the medicine from absorbing into the system. Keep away from eyes on both dogs and humans. Take care when disposing of the empty tube by wrapping it in a separate plastic bag before putting it in the trash.

    Prevention/Solution

    • While avoidance is the best way to prevent diseases such as West Nile virus and Rocky Mountain spotted fever carried by fleas and ticks, a licensed vet can prescribe a cure and keep watch over the pet for adverse reactions. The manufacturer recommends finishing the entire tube of medicine as well as regular application for recurring infestations.
