International Building Code Council Manual

The International Building Code Council Manual is updated and published every three years by the International Code Council (ICC), an association dedicated to building safety and fire prevention. The ICC develops construction codes used in both residential and commercial building. While the codes are not mandated by law, a majority of U.S. municipalities have used the ICC manual to author their own building codes.

International Code Council History

The ICC was founded in 1994 by three renowned building associations--Building Officials and Code Administrators International (BOCA), the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) and the Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCC). Their intent was to develop a single set of national construction codes. Prior to the ICC's founding, each group had its own set of codes used as each state, county or city saw fit. The first International Building Code Council Manual was published in 1997.

The manual covers all aspects of building systems, installation and design. The book also focuses on material use and building design, as well as structural and safety provisions with regards to fire, earthquakes and wind. The book also discusses accessibility, ways to exit or egress, occupancy, roofs and much much more. The latest edition of the book, scheduled for a March 2009 release, will cover all building construction with one exception: detached single-family and duplex dwellings and town homes that are less than three stories high.
