Forensic Accounting Internship Programs

Forensic accountants offer support to litigation by using investigative skills to perform audits in the effort to find fraud. The best thing that forensic accounting students can experience is an internship while still in school.

  1. Purpose

    • Graduating from college with a 4.0 GPA and a fresh forensic accounting degree is great, but even with the best scholastic qualifications, you are not guaranteed a position with the best firm right out of college. This is where an internship program comes in handy. Think of an internship as a two-way audition between you and an accounting firm. You get your name out there to top firms to prove yourself as a valuable potential employee. You also get to see how the company is run before deciding to start a career there.

    Benefits

    • Other than marketing yourself to companies, there are great benefits to applying for and accepting internships. For one, it is a great experience that can be used on a resume. Another benefit is the understanding of how the industry works from professionals actually working in it. One of the greatest benefits is the ability to make sure that forensic accounting is what you want to do for the rest of your life. Taking classes on the subject makes it interesting, but you never know for sure if it is a right fit until doing the actual work.

    Competition

    • Some of the best internship programs are getting very competitive. This wasn't the case years ago when the concept was still pretty new, but now, the forensic accounting field is growing, and more individuals are developing an interest in it. Colleges and universities are experiencing a growth in enrollment for forensic accounting degrees, and the class sizes are only getting bigger as the industry gets more popular. To make yourself more competitive for acceptance in forensic accounting internship programs, strive to get the best grades in school and make a positive impression on your professors and advisers. Their recommendations will be needed to beat out the other applicants looking to fill the open spots. Also, staying active with extracurricular activities and volunteer work proves that you are committed to the community. This will go along way to helping your application stand out from the rest.

    Restrictions

    • Know the restrictions before applying to internship programs. There is no need applying for a program that you are not qualified for or are unable to complete. One restriction that certain programs have is the time of year they are available. Some only offer internships during tax season, while others are only for individuals in their sophomore and junior years in college. Almost all internships have minimum GPA requirements. Proper research should be done on all internship programs before applying.
