Projection televisions are a part of the large screen TV market (along with LCD, DLP and plasma). While their popularity doesn't match that of the other types, they do remain a viable option for the home viewer, and have a dedicated core of enthusiasts. While projections televisions aren't the best choice for every situation, they can deliver abundant quality and quantity for the price.

There are two types of projection televisions: front-projection and rear-projection. Both have advantages and disadvantages, both from each other and from other large screen televisions, namely plasma and LCD. The screen of a front-projection unit tends to be extremely large, because the projector is mounted elsewhere (typically on the ceiling). Rear projection televisions are typically as large (or larger) than tube televisions, but often don't meet the aesthetic standards that today's televisions enjoy.
  2. Considerations

  3. Time for a larger screen!
    Time for a larger screen!
Front projection models are usually the most expensive option, and come in two parts (the projection unit and the screen itself). The most obvious advantage of front projection is the ability to experience television on a large screen. Like a movie theater, it requires the lights to be dimmed, and any windows to be obscured. The general rule of thumb for front-projection TVs is that the viewing distance should be at a 1.5 to 1 ratio to the screen size, so that an 8-foot screen would mean a 12-foot projection distance, so room dimensions must be taken into consideration. A rear projection television is a less expensive option, but along with the price difference comes some compromises; namely a smaller screen along with a bulkier unit. This allows rear-projection TVs to be comfortably viewed in medium to small rooms.

Biggest advantage -- the floor at home isn't sticky!
One of the major benefits of projections televisions is that inch for inch, they tend to be less expensive than other flat screen models. Of all types of televisions, front-projection models come closest to mirroring the cinema experience, both in size and picture quality. Rear-projection models, while less popular than other models, deliver a wider viewing angle higher contrast ratios than LCD televisions. However, they still are clinging to their price advantage in order to remain a viable entity in the home entertainment market.
  6. Warning

  7. Sometimes bulbs need to be replaced.
Sometimes bulbs need to be replaced.
Because the tech industry is continually innovating, there is a constant stream of new products available, most of which are less expensive and of a higher quality than last year's models. So no matter when you buy a large screen television, there will always be a larger, better and cheaper model available six months after you open your wallet.
  8. Expert Insight

For the budget-conscious consumer, a rear-projection model makes sense, as long as you have the room for it. For higher-end connoisseurs, a front-projection television works if certain conditions (including room size, ability to block outside light and a comfortable viewing area) are met.
