A tablecloth can serve a variety of functions. The most simple of these is to protect a table from food spills, burns from hot dishes and scratches from cutlery. Use a tablecloth to hide a less-than-attractive table or to mark a special meal or occasion. For a very formal meal, an ivory or white cloth is especially appropriate. Types

Tablecloths come in different shapes and fabrics. Use square cloths on square tables, of course, but try a square cloth on a round table for a dramatic effect. Cloths also come in round, rectangular or oval shapes and are made from a variety of fabrics. For an easy-to-clean tablecloth, look for a cloth in vinyl or another waterproof fabric than can be wiped clean of spills. Remember that waterproof tablecloths are very casual, so don't try to use a vinyl cloth for a formal dinner party. For fancier occasions, look for a white or ivory cloth in linen or a high-quality synthetic blend. For everyday use, find a heavier cotton tablecloth in a solid color that complements your decor and the color of your tableware.

Considerations

Tablecloths do come in different sizes, and it's important to know the size of your table before you buy a cloth. If you're buying a tablecloth for casual use, you'll want it to hang 10 to 12 inches below the edge of the table. Choose formal tablecloths that drape at least 15 inches from the edge of the table. Measure the length and width of your table, then multiply the desired drop by two to get the needed length and width for the tablecloth.

Warning

Do not choose a flowered table cloth or a wild print. A solid tablecloth is the most elegant choice, even for the everyday table. Bring in patterns in your napkins or placements or find a colorful centerpiece that complements your tablecloth.
Also make sure to check the care requirements of a tablecloth before you buy it. If it requires dry cleaning or needs to be ironed before each use, it may not be for you.
