About Trading Standards
The group of regulations in the United Kingdom that focuses on consumer information and protection are called the trading standards. The trading standards provide consumers with information on businesses, recall alerts, and aid consumers who are engaged in disputes. They are managed by the Trading Standards Institute, a professional association that is comparable to the Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce in the United States.

Trading Standards Institute
-
The Trading Standards Institute (TSI) was created in 1881 under the original name of The Institute of Trading Standards Administration as a trade organization. Businesses may apply to be considered "approved" vendors, indicating they have been examined by the institute and deemed trustworthy for consumer business. TSI works for the general consumer population by interfacing with the British government at all levels regarding consumer protection, raising business standards and creating fair market policies.
Business Requirements
-
Approved businesses of the TSI are held to a high standard of professional conduct, including fair pricing, good customer interaction, appropriate disclosure of ingredients or materials, and providing genuine services and products to customers. More specific trading standard regulations vary based on industry. For example, agricultural businesses must accurately identify the contents of feed and fertilizer and not include unnecessary or deliberately harmful chemicals in their composition. Similarly, food vendors must not sell spoiled or tampered food, and must not utilize misleading advertising campaigns.

Partnership with the ECC-Net
-
Under the trading standards, British consumer protection extends wherever the consumer travels, including European states and the United States. TSI works in tandem with many consumer quality agencies throughout Europe to resolve conflicts and share information on business experiences, such as the European Consumer Center Network (ECC-Net). In fact, one of the most popular trading standards tools for consumer awareness with online shopping, "Howard the shopping assistant," is and ECC-Net development that is available to British consumers through a partnership between the TSI and ECC-Net.
TSI Annual Conference
-
The trading standards are reviewed and discussed at the Trading Standards Institute Annual Conference and Exhibition. The conference is held at various locations throughout the United Kingdom and Europe, and encourages the presence of vendors, consumers, and legislators to engage in dialogue about consumer protection, trade quality and policy making.
Community Development
-
The trading standards also work with schools to provide consumer education to youth and teens. The program "Ask Cedric" is geared to answering questions and making resources available to young consumers. Cedric is an acronym for the Consumer Education Resource Information Center. The trading standards also runs leadership events, provides fundraising guides for adolescents, and gives out a yearly "young consumer" award to a youth who wins a quiz competition regarding trading standards and legislation.
